This project is to provide affordable clean energy to off-grid and rural communities in Ghana. 50 households can benefit from the solar lanterns which provide better light for studying, and working.
People living in some rural communities in the Western Region of Ghana having no access to national electricity grid have to use kerosene for light which is an unreliable source of energy and also damages their eyes and health, especially children and pregnant women. There are almost no activities after sunset and before dawn. Children are not motivated to study, and adults can not do any active economic activities. It pushes families and communities in a downward spiral of poverty.
Our project improves access to clean and sustainable energy to 50 households, and more than 300 individuals will benefit from the lanterns. It will increase family savings from purchase of batteries or kerosene. Working hours will also be extended.
It will reduce Green House Gas emissions and contribute to the reduction in global warming. It will also improve quality of life, and address health, education and communication needs. What's more, solar lanterns increase alternative livelihoods.
