At this end of year 2013, the YUM Vocational Training Center (VTC) has just finished its fifth term by conducting theory and practical tests for all the students. Through 17 classes (which consists of 4 sewing classes, 6 English classes, 6 computer classes and 1 hospitality class), the number of graduating students reached up to 225 and were all entitled to receive the VTC certificate and get 100 % of their deposit refund. We also recently conducted 3 Job Seeking Skills Workshop for 78 participants from VTC’s students and the community around us. In these workshops, they learned how to make an application letter and a curriculum vitae; techniques, tricks & tips to face a job interview; and also about the industry's perspective in employee recruitment. Those who came for the 3 sessions (around 49 participants) were entitled to receive the certificate. These skills are needed because most of the community around YUM Cipanas does not understand how to apply for a job due to a lack of information or lack of access to this information.
Two sewing workshops were also conducted: one about art and craft products presented by Ms. Diani, a trainer with House of Lawe from Yogyakarta for 10 participants; and the second about the skill of stitching and bag making process which was presented by Ms. Whitney Riley, owner of Stitched, Inc. from America for 6 participants. Hopefully through these workshops, we can help all the participants to learn more about making products that can be sold to increase their income and fulfill their family needs.
Good news also came from the Priscilla Hall Memorial Foundation (PHMF) – VTC’s main donor – who has agreed to add 5 new computers and upgrade the 4 existing computers for VTC. New computers and equipment such as chairs, tables were purchased to complete these facilities. Luckily, we have 2 internship students from a Technical Vocational School in Cipanas and Pak Deden, our Computer Tutor, who helped our VTC Administrator - Andi - to install the computers for the new term in January 2014. Thanks to the new computers, for the next term, we will be able to accommodate 20 students in each class compared to 15 students during previous terms since the Computer class is the most favorite class in VTC due to computers being a very necessary skill nowadays.
We also had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Don Hall from PHMF who came with Mr. Mike Hilliard from Mama Sayang on Friday, December 20th, 2013 to see YUM Cipanas, VTC’s facilities, the new computers and to discuss the VTC’s improvements. Mr. Hall helped to give the certificates to the VTC students and met some students, administrator and teachers during his visit. It is thanks to PHMF that the VTC is able to run very smoothly for the last 2 years and hopefully, we will continue our cooperation next year to help more disadvantaged youths and communities around YUM Cipanas.

The fourth term of the Vocational Training Center (VTC) started on May 6th, 2013 with 17 classes consisting of 4 types of classes: Computer, English, Hospitality and Sewing Classes. The fourth term was able to accommodate around 270 unemployed youths, each one of them receiving 3 months learning and at the end, following a final exam as a requirement to pass the VTC. Besides this, the students have to fulfill the usual criteria of having more than 75 % attendance in order to pass the VTC and receive the VTC certificate.
By the end of the fourth term, a total of 172 out of 270 students were entitled to receive the certificate. This number is not a as good as the third term, because the Hospitality class opened with around 30 students at first, but near the end of training, these students had to follow an internship program outside the Cipanas area thus they automatically were absent 3 times in row so they were not entitled to receive the certificate. There were also some students who were not able to come because they had extracurricular activities in their school that clashed with the VTC schedule.
These are some of the barriers that we must face in providing free training for students. Although it is difficult, we still strive to provide the best, for example by doing counseling with students who are frequently absent or proposing to create a savings account for those who are absent due to a lack of money for transport to get to the VTC.
In addition to the regular classes, we also provided workshops to help more disadvantaged youths and teachers around the VTC to gain more knowledge and skills. In total, we were able to accommodate around 149 youths to follow the Job Seeking Skills Workshop, 30 teachers in the Computer Teacher Workshop and English Teacher Workshop and also 2 staffs in Sewing Workshop.
While the final exams were held, we also started the registration process for VTC’s fifth term and hoped to reach out to more students. In addition to spreading flyers, announcements and banners, presentations in schools were conducted to give a clear insight for the students and teachers to understand the purpose of the VTC. We also decided to open the registration process on the same day as our presentation at the school so that we could enlist students directly.
Through this new method, we were able to recruit 353 students and we will open 18 classes for the VTC’s fifth term! We even have to open 7 computer classes because students’ interest in this class increased, so we now have one computer class on Sunday. The VTC’s fifth term started in early September 2013 and with this growing number of students, Yayasan Usaha Mulia’s dream of helping more disadvantaged youths and helping them to receive the skills they need to gain employment is slowly becoming true.

After three months of learning in the Vocational Training Center (VTC), in early April 2013, a final test consisting of theory and practical sections was administered to measure the students’ achievement in gaining knowledge learned in the VTC Third Term. For 2 weeks, 161 students took the test and the result was that a total of 120 students out of 161 students passed and received certificates. This means that graduation rate of this term is 75%.
Registration for VTC Fourth Term has already opened to receive as many enthusiastic students as possible, because we don’t want to waste much time. The VTC Fourth Term consists of 6 English classes, 6 computer classes, 4 sewing classes and 1 hospitality class and has so far received the registration of around 253 students. Thanks for help of our GlobalGiving friends, Priscilla Hall Memorial Foundation (PHMF) and also the deceased Gerald Chalem from the USA who left a bequest for YUM in his will to help us open more classes up in this term. Hopefully we can always deliver the best results for those who have helped YUM’s VTC program and not only improve disadvantaged youth’s skills and knowledge to face the working world but also to contribute in reducing the unemployment rate.
As a beginning and as a morale-booster for the VTC Fourth Term, we held a competition between the students to design a new logo and slogan for VTC. Through the competition we hoped that the students will feel as if they are a true part of the VTC and will derive a sense of belonging. We also needed the new logo and slogan for the VTC’s new sign. In 2 days, around 11 students will compete to design the VTC logo and slogan in their computer classes. After having the design, we choose 2 winners—1 winner for the best logo and 1 winner for the best slogan and then we will combine those designs. Finally the VTC will get a new look!
Acep Rahmat, the winner of the VTC Logo describes that his logo consists of a series of letters which are edited in such a way as to produce a logo that is attractive and easy to remember, while the font color is chosen to coincide with the YUM logo;
In regards to his creation, Yayang Firman, the winner of VTC Slogan describes VTC as;
VTC is a place to learn Fast because there are only have 3 months lessons but it gives a lot of knowledge and skill, and Easy because VTC gives a simple but rich method that’s so easily adapted by the students.
With the new logo and slogan, the VTC has a new spirit with which to run the Fourth Term and hopefully we will always be able to give the best for those in need! Thank you for all you do.
VTC has started its third term since January 7th, 2013 by opening 10 classes of 4 training types; Computer, English, Sewing and Hospitality. Upon the registration and placement test, VTC accepted around 161 participants. Comparing to previous term, number of participants in 3rd term is 25% less due to lack of funding to open more classes.
In this term, we still implement the same regulations and system which is only those who pass the final test and meet 70% of the attendance will receive certificate and 100% refund. However, those who have less than 70% attendance will only receive 50% refund and not receive certificate.
The enthusiasm of participants at the beginning was high which is shown on the attendance list in the first 4 weeks. After 4 weeks running the 3rd term, VTC face challenges especially to maintain its attendance rate. Some of participants had to discontinue due to time conflict with their other activities schedule at school which include final exam preparation or internship program.
With all the challenges faced, we do believe that through a sincere purpose to help disadvantaged youths, to enable them to compete in job market, there is always a way to get through the challenges. In order to ensure the project implementation meet the objective, we schedule and perform regular monitoring and evaluation. In the same time, we strive to accommodate more beneficiaries who are unable to get the opportunity to attend the trainings by providing several workshops; Computer Teacher Workshop, English Teacher Workshop, Sewing Workshop and Job Seeking Skills Workshop.
As results the workshops indeed attract many participants and we received positive feedback and request from participants for conducting similar workshops on regular basis. In total our workshops attended by 34 teachers and 148 students.

Currently, VTC is finalizing the 3rd term by conducting final test in order to measure improvement of each participants from what they received in the last 3 months of training. We have a great hope that the students can benefit from VTC and be able to implement it in their life; not only to improve their skills and knowledge to face the world of work but also to contribute in reducing the unemployment rate. As a vanguard, VTC always try to voice the needs of those in need, especially for disadvantaged youths around Cipanas YUM Village.

The YUM Vocational Training Centre (VTC) proudly announces that the Second Term (from September until December 2012) has ended.
Starting on September 10th 2012, the VTC Second Term welcomed around 316 students in 5 types of classes including English Classes, Computer Classes, Sewing Classes, Job Seeking Classes and Hospitality Class. This second term has been provided 20 classes with an average 10 to 20 students per class. Learning from the implementation of the VTC’s first term, in the second term, we had a chance to perfect the previous system in order to create a better impact and result for 3 months.
During this 3 months period, implementation of the Second Term VTC was divided into 3 steps: preparation, implementation and evaluation or final test. The preparation was held to prepare the system, the tutors, the schedule, and the registration process. With help from the United World College South East Asia (UWCSEA), the Priscilla Hall Memorial Fund (PHMF) and also donors through GlobalGiving, we were able to reach more disadvantaged youths and open a new hospitality class.
After the preparation was set, in order to attain commitment from the participants, we gave orientation to all participants explaining the rules and regulations. We are very happy with the implementation of the second term as we managed to enforce the regulations and build better understanding with the participants; those who were not responsible were reminded of these rules and regulations. Those who passed the final test and met 70% of the attendance would get a certificate and their deposit would be 100% refundable. If the percentage of the attendance is less than 70%, then the deposit will be only 50% refunded and the participants will not receive a certificate.
As a result, from a total of 316 participants enrolled at the time of registration, at the end of the session only 250 participants were allowed to follow the final test due to their absence on 3 consecutive days without any notice. In the end, after all the curriculums were taught, the final test was held. The final test was divided into two types; theory and practice, to ensure that the students understood both the theory and the practice, which they would have to face when they work. Conducted in early December, this final test determined the students' graduation.
From 250 students who followed the final test, about 228 students or 91.20 % of students were eligible to receive a certificate while the rest of students who failed to meet 70% attendance were only given information on their test result. What a great improvement from the first term before!
Therefore, based on these successes, as well as the spirit and hopes of the New Year 2013, we hope that we can provide better training through the VTC. Currently, we are preparing for the Third Term of the VTC for around 200 students and we will start on January 7th, 2012.
