Providing Functional Literacy to Women in India

The project is teaching 250 illiterate women at a time in 14 centres to read and write Hindi along with vocational training for tailoring and teaching of basic healthcare in Delhi,India

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The project is located in and around Delhi, with the objective of teaching illiterate women functional literacy in 180 hours, and a vocation and awareness of basic healthcare. Benefits accruing to the women are a better quality of life, lesser exploitation and encourages them to send their children to school

How will this project solve this problem?

We are running 14 centres which are located in slums in and around Delhi, India. The centres teach Hindi through a computer based functional program developed by TATA Consultancy Services, and do not need a teacher.

Potential Long Term Impact

The project is very easy to scale up as cost of starting a centre is practically nil. Our objective is to eradicate illiteracy in India
