Summary
This project presently provides primary English medium education for 68 girls from an urban slum in India so that they can attain the skills necessary for better employment and hence a better life.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Vikasini believes that formal education is the only means by which the girls of Addagutta, Secunderabad the second largest slum in Asia, can
escape the fate that usually befalls the girl child in the poorer sections of Indian society, one of menial labor and long hours with meager wages. With this in mind, we endeavor to provide free education, food and supplies to the girls, so that the girls can hope for decent employment, positively impacting their lives and making a difference to society.
How will this project solve this problem?
Vikasini conducts all the activities of a formal school in addition we provide school dresses, midday meals and a health drink. Deserving girls will be given scholarships and mainstreamed into regular schools after they complete grade 5.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will ensure quality primary education for 100 slum girls by year 2014. The illiteracy in one block of the slum will be wiped out and the girls will be able to secure better employment. The danger of child trafficking can be kept at bay.
Project Message
I am a road sweeper who cannot read or write. My daughter went and enrolled herself in the school. She now teaches me to write and speaks in English. I am happy that she will not end up sweeping roads
