Summary
Libya faces a dual crisis: inside the country, countless civilians have been affected by the continuing violence, while thousands are cross the borders into Egypt and Tunisia each day. International Medical Corps has emergency response teams on the ground in eastern Libya and at both borders, providing critical medicines, supplies, and care.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Thousands are caught in the middle of the intensifying conflict between rebel forces and Qaddafi's government. Simultaneously, more than 400,000 people have already fled Libya, primarily into neighboring Egypt and Tunisia. Basic supplies, like clean water, medicine, and food are in short supply and many doctors and nurses are displaced due to the fighting.
How will this project solve this problem?
International Medical Corps has deployed emergency response teams to address urgent health needs in eastern Libya and at the borders. This includes providing emergency medical care, distributing hygiene kits, and supporting nearby hospitals and clinics. Our teams at the Tunisia/Libya border are also implementing psychosocial first aid training for volunteers and primary health care workers.
Potential Long Term Impact
A recognized first responder, International Medical Corps has the knowledge and expertise to bring emergency relief to the thousands affected by this conflict and will provide training to health professionals and volunteers to maximize the impact of our response and leave behind vital knowledge and skills that will sustain the community after International Medical Corps completes its work.
Project Message
"We are extremely concerned that as the conflict escalates, the violence is only going to get much worse, leading to large numbers of casualties and further displacement."
- Rabih Torbay, Vice President of International Operations
