Dear EWB-JAX Supporters -
Over the summer EWB-JAX received monitoring updates from our local NGO, Aqua Para La Salud (APS) on our water and sanitation projects in Guatemala. Several visits were made to the schools over the last year by the APS's Circuit Riders. The latrines with the flush toilets are still in good use. A new teacher has been assigned to maintain the structures. The toilets themselves are showing some wear, but are all functioning. A basket was in place for each stall for soiled paper. The teachers were advised that they could flush the paper, but this habit of collecting paper is well established in Guatemala and hard to change. The septic tank and absorption pit are functioning as designed and there are no reports of odor or leakage. The new maintenance man was shown how to check the septic tank for solid accumulation and what to expect is normal for the tank. In general, the structures are functioning as planned except for some normal wear and tear. The long term sustainability of the facilities depends a great deal on the competence and vigilance by the teachers in controlling the children and the use of the facilities. EWB-JAX and APS will continue to make visits to assist the schools with repairs and remind the teachers and children of their responsibilities. Thank you again for your support and donations to help provide clean water and proper sanitation to the schoolchildren of Nebaj,Guatemala.
