Summary

EWB-Jax will provide two schools in Guatemala with clean water and sanitation so that the students can focus on their education and future instead of fetching water for several hours per day.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In the small village outside Nebaj, Guatemala, many residents do not have access to running water. Many families must fetch any water they need from a public washing station. The public water supply, which is neither filtered nor disinfected, runs dry by the early afternoon. More than 500 children that attend two neighboring schools in the community have an unreliable water supply and no septic system. These basic human needs — clean water and sanitation — go unmet for many Guatemalan children.

How will this project solve this problem?

Engineers Without Borders - Jacksonville Professionals will install new hand washing stations, a five-cabinet latrine with a septic system, and large water tanks for an ample fresh water supply. We will improve the existing minimal facilities.

Potential Long Term Impact

Installations and improvements will provide a reliable, sustainable source for water and proper treatment of wastewater. The village can be more productive, focusing on education and the future, instead of fetching water for several hours per day.

Project Message
