Sunshine Cambodia’s Family Development Program – a brief background:

Sunshine Cambodia (SC) works with 118 families in 3 areas of Phnom Penh where families live in poverty. SC is committed to working with these families over a 3 year project cycle, in order to build parental responsibility and self-reliance.  SC’s programs include a Food subsidy, Parenting Skills Training, Vocational Training & Job Placement, Small Business Development and Startup Capital, Savings Groups, as well as Emergency and Disaster Relief programs.

“I want to own my own business! “

I longed to run a small business, if only I had enough money to get started,” says Mrs Chev Phorn, a 38 year old widow to came to the city in 2006 with twin baby boys and her aged mother.  However with only a low level of education, it was hard to find work and her twins faced malnutrition.  A kind man brought milk for the boys for 4 years while she struggled to make ends meet by collecting recyclable things.

In 2013, things changed for the better when her family joined the SC program.  Her sons received support for both education and food, reducing her burden.  “I can even save some money now and I have learnt so many things from the parent trainings.  I am very encouraged when SC staff come and visit me and I feel like we are working together. One day I will have my own business – I just have to save a little bit more!”

Sunshine Cambodia’s Child Development Program – a brief background:

SC supports 181 children (Male: 79, Female: 102) in 3 areas of Phnom Penh where families live in poverty. Each child gets a public education and outstanding students also attend private classes. Since 2012, we have used a community-based approach and so there are 3 children’s clubs in each main area.  The clubs give the children the opportunity to play sports (soccer & kickboxing) and learn music, computers and other life skills.

“I want to be an English Teacher!”

Pharith’s family left Prey Veng Province in 2000 to find work in the city but his parents barely earned enough to cover daily expenses.  “We didn’t have enough food to eat, we didn’t have land or proper housing and we kids couldn’t go to school.”  After 9 years of struggle, Pharith’s family found out about Sunshine. “By God’s grace, my family was accepted into Sunshine in 2009 and my sister and I could go to school again!  We also received a lot of love, care and encouragement.”

Pharith is now doing well in Grade 5 and his sister is in secondary school.  Their dad has been able to save money to buy a motorbike and now works as a motorbike taxi driver while their mum sells eggs.  Their family life is getting better and better.   Pharith says, “Thank you to Sunshine and its donors who have prayed and contributed to us. Without you all, my family and I wouldn’t be here today. Please keep us in your prayers. I want to be an English teacher who can educate the poor and needy people in the future.”
