Mata no Peito: Protect & Replant Brazilian Forests

Apr 29, 2013

Mata no Peito update

On behalf of Nike and other partners in the Mata no Peito Initiative, we thank individual and corporate donors for their continued generous support. To date we have raised over $35,000 from individuals and corporations, who via retirement of carbon credits to offset their carbon footprints have removed more than 7,750 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere – equivalent to over 17 million pounds of CO2 and taking 1,615 cars off the road for a year! All funds will be pooled with other corporate and individual partner donations to the Mata no Peito Fund, which will provide funding to projects that protect and replant forests throughout Brazil.

Next summer, the eyes of the world will be on Brazil as the host of the World Cup. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the event are estimated to total over 14 million tons - more than 11 million tons from new construction and transport projects in addition to over 3 million tons from athlete and spectator participation, primarily associated with air travel among the 12 host cities. Mata no Peito partners can offset their own emissions while contributing to offsetting the GHG emissions of the world’s second largest sporting event.

Earlier this year we announced Sustain:Green as the newest corporate partner in the Mata no Peito initiative. Sustain:Green will soon launch a biodegradable credit & debit card that will offset for all card purchases through retirement of Nike offsets to benefit Mata no Peito. Sustain:Green cardholders will have the unique opportunity to not only reduce their carbon footprint as they make everyday purchases, but will also be funding investments in Brazil forestry projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve livelihoods. Sign up now to be one of the first to get the Sustain:Green card at

We remain eager to confirm additional Mata no Peito coalition partners to help raise awareness of the importance of forests to address climate change, sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity.
