On behalf of Nike, Winrock and other partners in the Mata no Peito Initiative, we thank individual and corporate donors for their generous support, including software development company iObit, which contributed through its Corporate Social Responsibility campaign donating 10% of its profits to selected projects, including Mata no Peito. To date we have raised almost $35,000 from individuals and corporations, who via retirement of carbon credits to offset their carbon footprints have removed more than 7,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere - the equivalent of taking 1,500 cars off the road for a year! All funds will be pooled with other corporate and individual partner donations to the Mata no Peito Fund, which will provide funding to projects that protect and replant forests in Brazil - improving livelihoods within forest-based communities.
Nike has secured an agreement with one new Mata no Peito coalition partner, with the exciting announcement expected by early 2013. And as eyes turn to Brazil as the host of the approaching 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic games, Nike continues discussions with several target coalition corporations to obtain formal commitments to launch the initiative, which aims to demonstrate the strength of joint actions to tackle deforestation by investing in selected innovative forestry projects that demonstrate scalability, economic sustainability, community engagement and enhanced livelihoods.
