On behalf of Nike, Winrock and other partners in the Mata no Peito Initiative, we thank donors for their generous support. To date we have raised over $8,000 from 100 individuals, who via retirement of carbon credits to offset their carbon footprints have removed almost 1700 tons of CO2-equivalent from the atmosphere – the equivalent of taking 350 cars off the road for a year! Mata no Peito has also raised $25,000 in corporate commitments for the coalition initiative. All funds will be pooled with other corporate and individual partner donations to the Mata no Peito Fund, which will provide funding to projects that protect and replant forests in Brazil - improving livelihoods within forest-based communities.
Nike has been in discussions over the past three months with several high-profile corporations in Brazil regarding becoming partners in the Mata no Peito coalition with substantial donations. The next round of meetings is being scheduled for March (after Brazilian summer holidays and carnival are over), and we hope to be making an announcement shortly thereafter.
Stay tuned for the next progress update on this new and exciting initiative!
