Summary

APROFER, a Global Grassroots sponsored project created by 16 local women, will fight violence against women associated with property rights through trainings in the rural Ngorero District of Rwanda.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

If men, women, children and the local government have access to education concerning property rights protecting women, there will be a greater level of understanding among couples and the local government to uphold the law when land disputes erupt. Women are often evicted from land that is rightfully theirs because there is little knowledge about the laws that protect them among the local population and authorities. The project will benefit 500 community members in its first year of operations.

How will this project solve this problem?

APROFER will focus on training different segments of the local population and follow up with periodic community visits. Regular assessment will measure change and identify areas where the project can be more supportive to the local population.

Potential Long Term Impact

APROFER envisions that education about property rights and law will have an impact on the community's perception of gender equality, and that a greater number of people will be informed and able to defend their legal rights.

Project Message

"By creating and supporting a community environment that is educated about issues (particularly violence) related to property rights, people will work to combat it as a group."
- Drocella Mukantwali, Project Leader and Community Member
