Challenge

Chronic disease conditions including obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure are increasingly impacting our children, especially low income and minority children, and are expected to contribute to the epidemic of chronic kidney failure. The problem of kidney failure related to preventable causes in the United States is getting worse, and minority populations are at highest risk. This project aims to reverse this trend for 100 children, their families and communities in the Portland area.

Solution

MIKE Program reaches young people at a time when their health choices have the greatest chance to effect meaningful change. We team community and health professions students with at-risk youth to empower them to live healthier lifestyles.

Long-Term Impact

This project will train 100 youth to adopt, apply and advocate for healthy behaviors to prevent chonic kidney disease in themselves, their families and their communities.
