Boyo Community Radio is underfunded. It is struggling to pay electric bills and has no paid employees to help keep operations running smoothly. BCR is located in the rural Cameroon and is chief means for villagers to acquire information regarding local, national and international news events. Community development is dependent on widespread distribution of accurate information that is guided by the pertinent interests of the community-- BRC is a great force to help see this come to reality.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
In Cameroon, the problems are almost always too many to list-- but almost always it boils down to funding. Boyo Community Radio's operations are in constant jeopardy due to a brute lack of funding. BCR continually struggles to pay the light bills and thus is unable to buy many simple, but essential, pieces of technology which will enable reports to conduct professional interviews in the field and keep the lights on-- literally.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project will connect donor support to the community radio station in order to help facilitate serious improvements in not only the technology at BCR's disposal but eventually to improving BRC's organizational structure as well!
Potential Long Term Impact
BCR is recognized as a vital source for news (local, national and even international) and cultural programming to the mostly illiterate population. Since BCR is a source of important accurate information it is important that BCR is able to increase broadcasting hours. More reporting can equate to a better educated, involved and aware community!
