Summary

The "Preventing Newborn Hypothermia in Afghanistan" project will partner with four hospitals in Kabul, Afghanistan, to provide much needed thermal support to premature and low birth weight babies born in these clinics that have no access to incubators or radiant warmers. We will also provide education and raise awareness about the devastating impact of hypothermia. We plan to impact the lives of approximately 2000 babies and their mothers.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Afghanistan currently has the highest infant mortality rate in the world, and premature and low birth weight babies born in Government hospitals have a very low chance of survival. Embrace aims to help these vulnerable babies by providing partner hospitals with our low cost infant warmer, coupled with education on hypothermia for staff and families. With nearly 2,000 births per month, the hospitals have no access to incubators, and almost half of its infants require thermal support.

How will this project solve this problem?

The "Preventing Newborn Hypothermia in Afghanistan" project aims to initially equip our partner hospital with 10 Embrace infants warmers, that will provide thermal support to approximately 500 premature and low birth weight babies. After launching in our first partner hospital, we will expand to three additional hospitals, with the opportunity to impact approximately 1,500 more infants.

Potential Long Term Impact

Our project will initially impact the lives of approximately 2000 premature and low birth weight babies and their mothers. By addressing the problem of newborn hypothermia, we will help improve these infants' chances for a healthy life long into the future, and offer their mothers the opportunity to see their babies grow.

Project Message

We're using the warmer to help care for tiny infants. The warmer improves the human condition, and meets the global challenge of helping to care for tiny infants simply, reliably and inexpensively.
