Without your help; more Moms could have suffered

Aketch; thanks for helping Moms in Omilling!
Aketch; thanks for helping Moms in Omilling!

We wish you a happy new year 2013!

Thanks for your recent generous gift to Stop South Sudanese Moms from Dying in Childbirth project. Your committed to help the needy to get out of poverty is really appreciated by our trustees and those will benefit most – the children!

South Sudan has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world: a South-Sudanese woman has a 1 in 7 chance of dying owing to pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Extreme poverty and a severely inadequate health care system threaten the lives of millions of South Sudanese people, especially women and children.

In December 2012 the project supplied 2 boxes cotton wool, 5 pieces sterile gowns, and 14 pieces maternity pads. Omilling is expecting two Moms to give birth in February and first week of mach 2013.

The Moms are eager to see this project progressing. They need your help to stock the Survival Maternal Maternity Unit.

While our communities had just started to adjust from the shocks and devastation of prolonged civil war, they were yet met by airstrikes and ground assaults launched against South Sudan in the bordering states by Sudan armed forces and militant allies. This brought more unnecessary displacement, vulnerability, anguish and human suffering.

Life in the South Sudan – Sudan bordering states became unbearable as cost of living steadily skyrocketed. While two nations have signed a deal to promote peaceful coexistence, the impact of recent conflict include Abyei has caused humanitarian needs to the affected people.

We therefore, request our partners to continue their support to Hope Ofiriha and more importantly to the needy and vulnerable groups in the communities. We look forward to working with all of you in 2013.

May I take this opportunity to wish our donors and partners a very happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year 2013!

Childbirth Delivery Bed; ordered

Anne Martins: only mid-wife serving in Omilling
Anne Martins: only mid-wife serving in Omilling

The Clinic has unskilled birth attendant who is pioneering behavior change locally as more mothers opted for skilled delivery.

In the span of just two years, 105 women gave birth to 107 babies at Onura Maternal Maternity Survival Clinic rather than give birth at home, and 8 mothers with serious pregnancy related complications referred to Juba State Hospital.

The project supplied the survival clinic with: 10 small boxes of cotton wool, 5 boxes of syringes/needles, 4 boxes of sterile gowns/gloves, and 15 boxes maternity pads, 3 sets of umbilical cord clam, 9 boxes forceps/sutures, 4 sets of birthing mats/scissors, and 1 set of delivery instruments.

The project also purchased a childbirth delivery bed, which reinforced the capacity building of the clinic. This order is on way to Onura.

At the request of women, Anne, (a village midwife), is awarded a two year course leading to “Certificate in Midwifery”, at Mayanja memorial Hospital Foundation, Uganda. After completion, she will return to help mothers deliver safely in Onura. She is waiting for her admission. We still don’t know if or not she will be accepted. By the time of reporting we haven’t heard from the college.

HO Plans to Buy Manual Delivery Bed

A childbirth delivery bed

Onura Maternal Survival Project will soon save lives of hundreds of mothers and their babies when the childbirth delivery bed arrives. The project also will train mid-wives to deal with childbirth complications.

On July 19 2011 GlobalGiving throw a baby shower for South Sudan’ Onura clinic. Due to the overwhelming supports of GlobalGiving’s donors, we’ve raised over $21,000 to save even more mothers and babies.

HO plans to buy a childbirth delivery bed from Aegean-tech, a producer based in China. Aegean-tech has quoted the price including the CIF, and the shipment takes thirty days to arrive Mombasa port from China. HO has applied for tax-exemption from the government of southern Sudan (Goss), so when the cargo arrives it will not be taxed. This is needed in advance to make a decision whether or not to import, and also it reduces the cost, and follow up time. The port clearance fees , Mombasa – to – Onura transport cost, and the actual cost price in China  – all these will be total up to see if they are within the budget. If they do, a decision to buy will be made.

The maternal Mortality rate in Onura has been the highest in South Sudan. Soon your generosity will give “a childbirth facility” to handle the deliveries; and mothers no longer need to die while giving birth.
