Buy a Net; Help PSI Protect Children From Malaria

Thank you for supporting PSI’s “Buy a Net; Save a Life” project. Malaria affects approximately half of the world’s population but the majority of deaths are concentrated among children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. The “Buy a Net; Save a Life” project has increased access to malaria prevention and treatment through the delivery of long-lasting insecticide treated nets. With the help of your contributions, PSI distributed 42.2 million+ bed nets in 2012, thereby averting more than 55.2 million malaria episodes and preventing more than 414,00 deaths caused by malaria. You helped us add over 13 million years of healthy life around the world.

In 2011, PSI was involved in the delivery of about half of all the nets that were distributed in sub-Saharan Africa that year. To expand our reach, PSI distributes nets both for free and at highly subsidized prices through mass campaigns, routine health facility distributions, community health workers and the private sector.

Of the 150 million nets distributed by PSI since 1995, 52 percent were distributed via continuous distribution channels, such as antenatal care clinics and private sector retailers and 48 percent were distributed via mass distribution campaigns.

Malaria affects approximately half of the world’s population but the majority of deaths are concentrated among children under five in sub-Saharan Africa.

In supporting PSI’s “Buy a Net; Save a Life” project, you have helped to increase access to effective malaria prevention and treatment interventions through the delivery of long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs).

PSI uses multiple channels to deliver these interventions, including the public and private sectors and community case management strategies. PSI works in 32 malaria endemic countries, including 24 in Sub Saharan Africa.

To date, PSI has delivered more than 150 million insecticide treated mosquito nets and more than 35 million malaria treatments. In 2011 alone, PSI delivered 43 million nets, representing roughly half of all nets delivered in Africa last year.

With the help of your contributions through GlobalGiving since April 1, 2012, PSI has distributed 3,116,551 bed nets in 19 countries, adding 1,052,394 years of healthy life. You have helped mothers to protect their families, and have helped children around the world reach their fifth birthday.
