68% of girls in Rajasthan are married under legal age of 18 and 15% of these girls are married before 10. Hence, India is home to the largest number of illiterate women in the world (over 200 Mn) with over 3 Mn eligible yet out of school girls. We've identified 19,956 out of school girls in Jalore district in Rajasthan and have enrolled 9,346 girls. We need your help to enroll the remaining 10,610 girls into rejuvenated schools. When you support us, you give a girl at least 1 year in school.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Only 1 out of every 100 girls in rural India is educated to grade 12 today. Girls drop out of school and are forced into early marriage. 68% of girls in Rajasthan are married before the legal age of 15 and 10% of them are married before the age of 10. 40% of girls there drop out before they reach the fifth grade. This leaves them unprepared for life and parenthood and exposes them to exploitation, violence and high risk of death during childbirth.
How will this project solve this problem?
With each additional year in school, a girl not only gets married at least a year later but her income generation opportunities go up by at least 10%. We rejuvenate existing government schools rather than build costly new ones and convince parents and community to send girls to school. We have identified 19,956 out of school girls in Jalore district of Rajasthan, India and have enrolled 9,346 girls. We need your help to enroll the remaining 10,610 girls into rejuvenated schools.
Potential Long Term Impact
Girls education is the best panacea for child marriage. An educated girl not only fights malnutrition, reduces HIV and violence against women, but also contributes towards the overall socio-economic upliftment of the nation by perpetuating the cycle of education in her family. Research by the UN and the World Bank shows that when girls go to school, birth rates, child mortality, political extremism and violence against women decrease, while family health improves and national income increases.
