Our project is focused on sterilizing and vaccinating stray and feral cats in Berks County to reduce the number of cats killed in our shelters because there just are not enough of homes.
Berks County is in crisis due to the massive overpopulation of free-roaming cats in our neighborhoods. The numbers of cats entering our local animal shelter has steadily increased and resulted in thousands and thousands of needless euthanasias. The unneutered street cat population takes up badly needed space at the shelter thus making it more difficult to adopt out rescued cats and adds up to a financial burden of over half a million dollars a year.
Our project aims to sterilize free-roaming cats, thus reducing the impact on our local shelters. In turn, this results in less euthanasias and more homes available for adoptable cats.
Our project will reduce the intakes of feral cats at out local shelter as well as decrease complaints of nuisance behaviors. A 10% reduction in euthanasia would save our local shelter almost $55,000 allowing more rescued cats to be housed & adopted.
