ARF is located in a city with a large number of Pit Bull strays. These beautiful dogs are often times injured, scarred and require immediate vet care. They are never spayed or neutered when left at the shelter gates. Due to local breed specific legislation, it is difficult to find good, loving homes for them. ARF is a no kill sanctuary that provides care for the lifetime of a dog. These are loving, intelligent dogs that do not deserve the bad rap they get. We help educate the public about this.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The Jackson, MS area has a huge pit bull population. Dog fighting prevails in this and the surrounding counties. Local politicians feel that passing breed specific legislation is the answer to this problem. It is not. As a matter of fact, it does nothing to deter the problem and causes hardship on the good pit bull owners. ARF has taken in many pit bulls and has limited adoption options. Therefore, as a no kill sanctuary, ARF will house and care for these pit bulls for their entire life.
How will this project solve this problem?
By educating the community and offering spay and neuter options to this low income area, ARF hopes to reduce the number of unwanted and neglected pit bulls. Also by educating the community, ARF hopes to decrease the fear of this breed.
Potential Long Term Impact
It is ARF's hope that by working with national groups and by being proactive in their own community, the number of pit bulls on the streets will decrease and the number of options for adoptions will increase. Through education, ARF also hopes to decrease and eventually eliminate dog fighting, with harsher laws and bigger penalties.
