The Playtime Project ensures that children in shelters have opportunities to play, exercise and learn. Help us start a field trip program for teens and bring sports, recreation and snacks to 50 kids.
Recreation is severely restricted in the shelter environment where hundreds of children are denied opportunities to play. Children who are homeless experience a higher level of stress and trauma which makes play an even more important vehicle to heal from what led to family homelessness. Play helps restore a sense of normalcy to children who no longer have their own rooms or toys and helps combat stress and childhood obesity, an epidemic that is higher in DC than in any other state.
Start a field trip program for homeless teens to get out, explore our nation’s capital and eat a nice meal; Fund a weekly sports, recreation and health program for homeless children at two shelters serving 50 children every week.
Improve health and fitness outcomes for homeless children are at high risk for childhood obesity and poor nutrition. Reducing stress among traumatized children will also help them better focus in school and break the cycle of homelessness.
