By a female, 46-60 years old , in Busia, Kenya
Map of THE MARACHI SOFA A decade after the independence of this republic of Kenya, the members of my community still sat on stones and some used animal skin to sit on. Most homes had niced trimmed stones that acted as chairs and some smooth animal skin which women and children sat on. It was so hard to carry the stones especially when the head of the house wanted to sit outside the house. Thank God for the Marachi community which developed what is commonly known in the Luhya community as 'Marachi Sofa'. This sofa is made of some 'Fito's strong branches or young growing trees which are curved and tired together or nailed together and then the sitting part and the back part is sewed using strong fibres. The sofa are very light and could be made of one seater , two seater or even three seater. This sofas were sold in the market places and become a replacement of stones and animal skin in other communities which later learnt how to make this sofas. Read more.
