Maison de Naissance (MN, Home of Birth) maternity clinic provides FREE midwife attended birthing services to impoverished women in rural Haiti year-round, 24x7, where the maternal mortality rate is 300/100,000 deliveries, vs. 24/100,000 in the USA (WHO 2008). In eight years of midwife attended deliveries, MN has had NO maternal deaths. We offer prenatal, delivery, postnatal, HIV/AIDS, family planning, and well baby care. We are seeking funding for one midwife's salary for one year at the clinic.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Without a midwife in attendance at a medical facility, a delivering mother in Haiti who experiences complications has a very low probability of survival. Home delivery environments are often on dirt floors, with no clean water or other sanitary facilities available.
How will this project solve this problem?
Our midwives are certified in delivery and complication resolution procedures by the Haitian Ministry of Health (MSPP), and have realtime US based OB/GYN support through cell phone and internet links to consulting doctors. They receive regular continuing education from MSPP, MidWives for Haiti, and visiting doctors from the USA. They have access to modern equipment and facilities to ensure a safe birthing experience for both the mother and her baby.
Potential Long Term Impact
Our midwifery services have the potential to save the lives of mothers and babies who might otherwise not survive the birthing process. We give both mother and baby the chance to lead a healthy life, reducing the expense and heartache of complications that can lead to illness and even death. Each midwife at MN delivers on average 150 babies per year, and touches the lives of many more in their patients' extended families and communities.
