Summary

Rainforest Partnership works with communities in Pampa Hermosa to build infrastructure for ecotourism, in turn providing alternative, sustainable income sources and thus protecting their cloudforests.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Throughout the Peruvian Andes, deforestation is a growing issue. In the Pampa Hermosa province, the deforestation is principally a result of agriculture. However, communities are now receiving reparations for damages during the narcotic wars of the 1980's. This money is intended to be used for cattle purchase and raising or development of trout farms. All of these practices degrade the environment and none offers a sustainable income for the community members.

How will this project solve this problem?

The goal of the project is to develop Pampa Hermosa as an ecotourism site. With the community, we plan to improve the local infrastructure and build housing and kitchen facilities, thus, attracting ecotravelers and providing income for the community.

Potential Long Term Impact

This project and the development of an ecotourism site will prevent deforestation, provide reliable, long-term income for hundreds of community members, and preserve a rich and diverse ecosystem.

Project Message

This project is important because it allows the Pampa Hermosa communities to develop and grow while protecting the local resources and one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet.
