In 2005, OYE began by sponsoring 6 scholarships for young women. The 2010 class boasts 75 students, ages 15-23, who come from marginalized backgrounds and would otherwise be forced to work help support their families. The application process is rigorous and involves an interview, socio-economic study and a house visit. OYE´s success lies in its power to unite youth leaders from across the city to collaborate with local youth on projects, such as OYE´s youth radio El Ritmo. (view small | med | large | orig)

OYE youth conduct interviews, write and edit the monthly magazine. This is one example of how OYE´s leadership training program is put into action by youth to engage their communities and create a space for dialouge in a repressive society. Trust is what got us here - Working together

Trust is what got us here - Working together
Yarli and Amilcar study together during one of OYE´s group study session. Students use this time to help each other with homework and finish group assignment. OYE works hard to involve the community by inviting local teachers, mentors, and guest speakers to workshops. This approach has been beneficial because when OYE youth leaders reach out to local businesses for sponsorship, they do so with a new found confidence. OYE´s office serves as a refuge for youth who have no place else to study. (view small | med | large | orig)
