Summary

The Osa Community Support Fund provides microfunding to local communities in Osa Peninsula. The gifts to local community groups are used for community improvement such as drinking water systems, community centers, health centers, local development activities, bridges and other related projects.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The Osa Peninsula is rich in wildlife, sparsely populated, and, until recently, very difficult to access. Towering rainforests line undeveloped beaches and untouched coves, making this region one of the most beautiful, and biodiversity important, places anywhere on earth. The communities, however, are amongst the poorest in Costa Rica, with land tenure problems and little or no access to financing. Therefore the possibilities for accessing funding for their projects are very remote.

How will this project solve this problem?

The FACOSA (The Osa Community Support Project) has already disbursed around $15,000 USD for 5 different community projects in 3 different communities; helping with the aqueducts of La Tarde, the community center in El Progreso, a computer room in El Progreso's school and a community productive project in Rancho Quemado. We hope to improve the quality of the lives of individuals in these communities.

Potential Long Term Impact

We hope to improve the lives of local people in these communities: We can impact around 2000 people that will receive drinking water; 400 students with better school rooms; and we will empower communities by not telling what they need, but rather having them formulate their own solutions and helping them reach their goals.
