Poor Sanitation

By a male, 22-30 years old, in Nairobi, Kenya
Map of POOR SANITATION Sanitation is a major issue in our daily lives. When there is a proper sanitation, the risks of getting airborne and water-borne diseases are limited or reduced. However in some areas, sanitation is not considered as a major concern ans is not given priority. In mathare slums, there are burst sewers and the sewage just flows into residential areas. There is also no proper management of the sewage system which is also not properly designated. There is great risk of the residents being affected by waterborne diseases like cholera because there are no even proper toilets or latrines for use There have been several trials and attempts by the residents to push the government through the local authorities to ensure that there is proper r management for sewers but this has not happened. Therefore there is need for other stake holders or interested parties t come in and assis solve the problem. Chorela In Mathare

By a male, 22-30 years old, in Nairobi, Kenya
Map of CHORELA IN MATHARE Chorela is a waterborne disease and it is very rampant in Mathare village.Three in every five children have suffered from cholera and have either missed or gotten poor medication. This is because of the high cost of medication within the slum area. Although there are non-governmental Organizations that offer medication. it is at times very difficult to reach them and mostly they treat specific diseases. One major cause of cholera in mathare is poor sanitation the sewers all open and dumpsites almost everywhere heaped for many years.Children are the most affected because some could even be sported playing around the dirty dumpsite areas. One best way to help prevent cholera and malaria is by collecting all the dirty dumpsites and repairing leem maintaining the sewers.the government has been doing it. Read more.

How ever the city council of Nairobi have patnered with Non government organisations to help build ecosan toilets and latries and even designate specific dumping sites within the estate.the toilets/latries are placed in public sites taht can be reached easily and the garbage can be collected anytime. This is a better idea but it should be spread to all the slums within Nairobi. Read more.
