Early success interrupted by conflict

Thanks to support from other partners, we began operations on this project in 2013. BRAC South Sudan established 300 schools in target communities and enrolled 9,000 students age 8-11, 62% girls, as well as recruited and began training 297 female teachers from local communities. BRAC branches have also established several School Managament Committees with both male and female community members. Of the 9,000 children enrolled in BRAC schools, 85 are children with disabilities. BRAC focuses on enrolling particularly disadvantaged children including those who have never attended school. The schools are in safe and accessible locations in the target communities and have child-friendly teaching environments.

Though this project has enjoyed preliminary success having reached many initial goals for student enrollement, South Sudan entered a period of intense conflict in December. Access to schools was interrupted and all 30 schools in Jonglei state as well as 13 schools in Juba County were closed. Currently, 270 of the 300 schools are open. A limited number of displaced people are beginning to return to Jonglei state.

BRAC staff is in touch with the UN peacekeeping mission for security information. Please considering making a contribution to this important project. BRAC specializes in establishing vital communitiy networks in situations of conflict.
