Make Motherhood Safe for Tanzanian Women

Help to build, equip, and operate a new maternity hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Dar's overcrowded urban system causes women to share beds and even settle on the floor to give birth at existing care facilities. The new CCBRT Maternity and Newborn Hospital will provide quality maternity care - including emergency services - regardless of a woman's ability to pay, and guarantee each woman her own bed during her childbirth.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In Dar es Salaam's overcrowded labor wards, women share beds and settle on the floor to give birth, leading to a maternal mortality rate of 1,400/100,000 live births: 3 times the national average. Women with high risk pregnancies, especially, are victims of a system that lacks 24-hour emergency care, skilled health staff, equipment, operating theaters, and blood banks. For the poorest women, left with no alternatives to the public infrastructure, these gaps in service are especially acute.

How will this project solve this problem?

CCBRT's Maternity Hospital will be a specialized facility where even the poorest patients can access high-quality maternal health care. The first phase addresses the region's most urgent gaps, providing comprehensive EmOC services for referrals as well as neonatal care for newborns with complications. It will handle 50-60% of high risk pregnancies and deliveries in the region, in addition to overseeing region-wide capacity building initiatives, and providing hands-on training for medical staff.

Potential Long Term Impact

CCBRT MH's services will decrease stress on regional key public health facilities by 50%, thus reducing facility-based mortality by up to 500 maternal deaths and 2,500 neonatal deaths each year. It will have the annual capacity for 5,600 C-sections; 5,100 complicated deliveries (e.g., multiples); 500 premature babies; 3,100 babies w/complications; and 3,600 healthy newborns. It also will improve Tanzania's health infrastructure by introducing international best practices and stronger systems.
