Summary

The biggest shelter/rehabilitation center for the homeless in St. Petersburg helps an average of 220 homeless people a year to find employment, recover documents, receive medical assistance or find relatives and return to normal life.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

60,000 homeless people live on the streets of St. Petersburg (Russia). The average temperature in the winter is - 8C here. Last year 1002 people died on the streets during 5 cold months, and many people became disabled. Meantime the public shelters have only 220 beds for the whole city. The NGO Rehabilitation Center/Shelter Nochlezhka has 50 beds, and provides not only a roof over one's head and a daily meal, but also social services to help homeless individuals return to normal life.

How will this project solve this problem?

The rehabilitation shelter Nochlezhka provides holistic services for the homeless. During an individual's stay in the shelter, lawyers and social workers help them to recover documents, provide medical assistance and assistance locating permanent housing and employment. Psychological services for residents of the shelter provided by volunteer psychologists, also help pave the road back to an ordinary life. The shelter Nochlezhka is supported solely by private donations.

Potential Long Term Impact

Each year approximately 200 homeless people from the streets enter the Rehabilitation shelter Nochlezhka. Most of them return to an ordinary life with a help of the lawyers and social workers of the shelter. They find jobs, rent an apartment, return to their home in another city, get the medical assistance, or settle into group homes.
