Summary
Producing and broadcasting radio programs that provide critically needed information to the people of Nepal to heighten awareness and dialogue of health and women's empowerment issues.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
People in rural communities throughout Nepal struggle with reproductive health problems, HIV/AIDS and child trafficking because information about these issues is unavailable. Much of the country’s population is not only illiterate but remote, and is therefore impeded in accessing information. Our radio broadcasts – through satellite radios and community partner AM/FM stations – currently reach 9 million rural Nepalese with vital education about these challenges.
How will this project solve this problem?
Expanding our radio audience to 10 additional rural communities that lack AM/FM reception, providing them with satellite radio receivers, as well as ongoing training and support of local peer educators for discussion groups about the radio programs.
Potential Long Term Impact
More informed attitudes and behavior toward the issues addressed in the programming, with women empowered to take control of their health and well-being.
Project Message
“I saved my best friend’s life! I learned about trafficking through the broadcasts. I told my best friend about trafficking and warned her to watch out for the men who come to offer jobs in the city.”
- Nirmala, Nepali program beneficiary
