Challenge

On April 25, 2015, a massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepals. As of April 29, 1.7 million children in 21 districts have been the most affected, with this number expected to increase hourly, while thousands more injured and even more are left at high risk of potentially fatal diseases due to limited access to safe water and sanitation. Many children have been separated from their families during the earthquake and their homes and schools have been destroyed.

Solution

UNICEF is mobilizing an urgent response to meet the needs of children affected by this devastating earthquake, leading in the areas of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene, Nutrition, Education, and Child Protection. UNICEF is already on the ground supporting the supply of clean water, providing tents for medical facilities, providing supplies to reduce the risk of disease, providing emergency health kits, providing temporary learning spaces, and providing child-friendly spaces for psychsocial care.

Long-Term Impact

UNICEF has been in Nepal since 1968. In partnership with the Government, civil society, and others, UNICEF will support children and families affected by this disaster, and will support the people of Nepal in long-term recovery as they build back better. UNICEF will continue working relentlessly - and as quickly as possible - to protect the health, safety and well-being of the most vulnerable children and families devastated by the earthquake and in need of support in the long-term.
