To support the daily operations of a neonatal unit in northern Haiti that provides lifesaving treatment to newborns and mothers across the region.
Haiti has the highest rate of infant mortality in the western hemisphere - 60 deaths per 1,000, as compared to 7 per 1,000 in the U.S. 75% of births in Haiti take place at home without any form of medical support, placing both mother and child at great risk. These risks, which often needlessly lead to death or lifelong disability, can easily be avoided with appropriate care.
The Haiti Health Trust supports the work of a new neonatal unit opened in partnership with a range of agencies in April, 2012 at Hopital Convention Baptiste d'Haiti. This facility provides specialist care to newborns and mothers across North Haiti. With state-of-the-art equipment, including 5 incubators and a phototherapy unit, paired with outstanding expert staff, we are one of the few facilities in all of Haiti that is able to provide life saving treatment to countless infants and mothers.
Addressing one of the most critical needs in North Haiti, this unit is expected to provide services to over 1,200 births in 2013, and also offer an extensive outreach program through mobile health units.
