Volunteers planted nearly 40,000 trees at 722 events in 231 cities around the country, many of them in low-income neighborhoods that desperately needed their cooling shade. NNWM 2009 blasted past its goals of planting 35,000 trees at 500 events. ACT is currently gearing up for National NeighborWoods Month 2010-- maybe we'll break some more records! During this spring planting season, ACT continued its momentum by creating a mini-grants program to help schools, playgrounds and early learning centers provide their healthy benefits to children around the country. These projects engaged 1,200 young children in earth-friendly activities and learning, while also improving their learning and play spaces with trees. Nine organizations received grants from $500 to $3000 to plant trees that will shade schools and playgrounds and help reduce childhood problems such as asthma and ADHD.
