Uneducated girls remain trapped in a cycle of denied rights & poverty throughout their lives. Fewer than 10% of girls in South Africa advance beyond Grade 8. Why? When they begin to menstruate they can't afford underwear or menstrual products and are teased mercilessly in school, so drop out. To break the poverty cycle it is imperative these girls get an education. You can help 2,500 girls get supplies they need to stay in school and employ 10 women to make re-usable products for thousands more.
In South Africa, 25.9% of women over 15 being are unemployed. Fewer than 10% of the girls do not advance beyond Grade 8 because of challenges that result from not having access to underwear and menstrual products. The girls are teased and bullied when their period starts at an inopportune moment at school. This crushes their self esteem and they end up dropping out of school permanently. Without even basic education the girls are trapped in a vicious circle of poverty and forever marginalized.
With your help, we can provide 2,500 girls with underwear & re-usable menstrual products that will enable them to stay in school. And this funding, with support from Lunapads.com, will also help the start of GirlStuff.Period, a business that will employ up to 10 women who'll make re-usable menstrual pads & underwear, thereby helping even more girls in the future. By providing a few basic supplies we can empower these bright, resourceful & community-minded women to break the cycle of poverty.
Helping girls stay in school rectifies the imbalances in education & creates employment. Education provides girls & women with an understanding of basic health, nutrition & family planning, giving them choices & the power to decide over their own lives & bodies. Women's education leads directly to better reproductive health, improved family health, economic growth, for family & society, as well as lower rates of child mortality and malnutrition. It is also key in the fight against HIV/Aids.
