This project will provide instruments, materials and supplies, so that 2,500 inner-city children in NYC can participate in music-making within an engaging classroom environment. ETM is launching new programs at 7 inner-city public schools in 2013-14: 5 in the Bronx and 2 in Queens. Most of these kids will be attending music class for the first time ever, and we want them to have access to materials and instruments that will allow hands-on participation and will provide an exciting classroom.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
2,500 disadvantaged children in seven public NYC schools (located in the Bronx and Queens) will be receiving music education for the first time during 2013-14, but their schools do not have any materials and supplies for the new music classroom. We are also identifying new partner schools for 2014-15, and they will have brand-new needs.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project will support the purchase of instruments and educational materials for first-year partner schools. Needed instruments include xylophones, drums, and a "big foot" keyboard. Based on success at other ETM partners, we want to outfit the music classroom with a colorful sectioned rug which helps young students remain focused and engaged, with educational posters so that children can learn by looking around the room, and with books and songs for teachers to use as resource.
Potential Long Term Impact
With these instruments, supplies, and classroom decor, the music teachers can create a learning-friendly environment for these students, and provide instruction that will support learning in music, critical thinking, and general development like self-esteem and motivation. Your support will give teachers the tools to create engaging lessons and make the new music program an unforgettable experience for 2,500 students.
