Literacy is the key to self-empowerment. MuJER's 'Leer es Poder' literacy project is essential to the success of the women it serves. It not only provides women with the ability to read and write, but also with the self-confidence to take full advantages of the other programs MuJER offers.
MuJER currently works with the migrant women in Guatemala City's red light district that lack the education and/or economic resources that would allow them to escape a life of exploitation. Through educational classes, specialized workshops, and leadership development, MuJER works to empower over 500 women so they can find economic and emotional stability, have a voice in society, and better their own lives and the lives of their children.
The literacy project, Leer es Poder, is the backbone of MuJER's programs. This basic literacy class was the first class offered by MuJER, and has continued to serve as the first step toward the self-empowerment of our women. We partner with Guatemala's national literacy program, CONALFA (Comite Nacional de Alfabetizacion) and provide one-on-one literacy training.
The personal attention each woman receives in this program is essential to their success. It not only allows the women to leave the program with the ability to read and write, but also with the self-confidence to take full advantages of the other programs MuJER offers. Classes are held on a weekly basis and are completely free of charge for the women. Graduates of MuJER's programs have the opportunity to be trained as educators so they can give back to their community.
