Summary
Every day, we provide a glass of milk to each of the 1000 kids attending Care & Share Charitable Trust's literacy centers in five of Vijayawada's poorest slums.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Care&Share works in the city of Vijayawada, a city of 1.2 million in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Approximately 30% of the population are amassed in sprawling urban slums sharing a total lack of hygiene, drinking water, and sanitation. In these slums, thousands of children - all too often illiterate, sick, and malnourished- live in utter neglect. Care&Share works in five slums to provide nutrition, medical care, and basic literacy to around 1000 children.
How will this project solve this problem?
To offset some of the disastrous effects of malnutrition, Care&Share provides every child attending our literacy centers with a glass of milk per day. We distribute 32 gallons of milk every day; for a total cost of $25000 a year.
Potential Long Term Impact
Care&Share's mission is to give children an education and help them bloom into healthy, self-reliant individuals. In Vijayawada's ghastly slums, that goal cannot be accomplished without first attending to the kids' most basic nutritional needs.
Project Message
The milk distribution program gives these children a chance to fight another day. It is the first step toward giving them a semblance of a normal childhood.
