Summary

A staggering 60% of Tanzania's population lives on less than $1 a day. Women are deeply affected by this number, as in 2004 they were the head of household in 25% of families. Opportunity International aims to bring financial services to these people so they may work their way out of poverty.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The issue of gender equality still exists in Tanzania. Women are often head of households, but worldwide 75% of women have no access to financial services. Without access to savings accounts, loans, and insurance, the job of providing for a family becomes even more difficult.

How will this project solve this problem?

Opportunity International currently have over 9,000 active clients in Tanzania, and 76.8% of these clients are women. When these women receive access to financial services, they can improve and expand their businesses, allowing them to increase their profits and support their families. As a result, they can feed their families, fund their children's education, and break the cycle of poverty.

Potential Long Term Impact

Investing in women's empowerment has been shown to increase GDP, decrease HIV/AIDS rates, and increase civic participation. When women participate more in the labor force, the economy experienced the largest reduction in labor rates. By enabling women in their fight against poverty, you allow them to lift up their communities and future generations.
