Self-help groups in India provide women space to participate in training, avail new ideas, and develop self-confidence, self-esteem, & solidarity. Access to credit helps them start income generation.
Being an arid area, farming is highly vulnerable and oriented to meeting subsistence needs in the family. Men migrate because the return from agriculture is low and there are scant employment opportunities. The situation of women is more acute as they have to take care of the entire family. The project will meet the economic needs of women through SHGs. SHGs are a powerful tool for providing credit to acutely poor populations, while fostering economic and social empowerment among group members.
Organize 200 women into SHGs; train women in group management, saving, bookkeeping, and interacting with local banks. Provide small loans for viable and practical income-generation projects; ensure ownership of processes-conception to delivery.
The project will further the social and economic empowerment of women in Rajasthan to a profound degree. The SHGs provide a powerful platform to improve women’s decision-making power and the economic well-being of families and whole communities.
