Summary
Mia Hamm and her husband, Nomar Garciaparra, host an annual Celebrity Soccer Challenge on January 16th, 2010 to raise funds for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the Mia Hamm Foundation.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Mia often talks about "The Gift of Life" that can occur when people sign up for the National Marrow Donor Program. There are hundreds of people that die each year from bone marrow failure diseases because they cannot find a match. During the Celebrity Soccer Challenge event we sign hundreds of people up for the registry at no cost to them. We also raise funds for Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the families who are currently going through the transplant process there.
How will this project solve this problem?
We sign people up for the NMDP registry at no cost to them, we bring un-related donors and recipients together for the very first time, and we raise funds to support families going through the transplant process.
Potential Long Term Impact
We want to fill the Home Depot Center on January 16th so that everyone can hear the message of giving the gift of life. Because it costs $50 to join the registry, many people don't do it. We will be able to pay for all attendees who wish to join.
Project Message
"The Mia Hamm Foundation is a reflection of my own life experiences. Please join me in helping these families who need our support at this very difficult time in their lives."
