Klinik Espwa draws crowds

Since we cut the ribbon on our new medical clinic last June 15, we have formalized two important partnerships with American non-profits that donate medications. Our pharmacy has therefore been jump started and we can see the benefits among our patients. The number of visits has increased and the level of care has improved.

Healthcare is fundamental to the development of young children to adulthood. Our clinic maintains records of the following to measure activity and outcomes:

  • Annual Physical Examination - Each resident child and school attendee has an annual physical exam to include assessment for general physical health, height/weight, vision and hearing exams, testing for anemia, TB and HIV/Aids screening;
  • Immunization Program - Most of our children have incomplete vaccination documentation or have not received recommended scheduled immunizations. Thus the procurement of vaccination sera is of utmost importance. The Haitian Public Health Department does not provide immunizations for children over the age of five. As we are able, immunization clinics are offered to infants and children in the surrounding region;
  • Health Education Program - Education sessions on topics such as basic nutrition, sanitation hygiene and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention are provided for resident staff and children on a regular basis.
  • Acute Care Program - The acute care infirmary is used for observation and treatment of resident children. Dehydration, pneumonia and sickle cell crisis are the most common causes that historically have necessitated hospitalizations for our children.
  • Dental Program - We are hoping to soon equip a small, simple dental clinic which will provide basic dental care. Currently, when the children experience serious dental problems they are sent to a local practitioner and the treatment of choice is always extraction. We have many requests from US based dentists who volunteer their services and bring their own portable dental equipment. We plan to provide the necessary equipment in the new Klinik. Records of the number of children treated as well as the number of visiting dentists will the maintained. All of the children are in great need of a dental exam and a great many need treatment. The number of exams completed will be dependent on the purchase of equipment and the number of visiting dentists.

Nonetheless, we need help with the cost of operating the clinic and our medical programs. Your continued support via GlobalGiving will ensure thousands of children in Haiti receive the medical care they desperately need and deserve. We are grateful for your support.
