Summary
This project will fund much needed school supplies for Mercy Children's Centre, Kawangware that haven't been funded out of our general budget. These include: a text book for each child in Class 3-8, new uniforms and shoes for 75 students, new tables and desks, new beds at the dormitories, and cooking supplies. This will ensure that the school is well equipped through the end of 2011 and well into 2012.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
MCC Kawangware provides schooling and a safe haven for 200 orphans in a Nairobi slum. This year our funding so far has been sufficient to cover teachers' salaries, rent obligations, dormitory provisions for some students and a daily meal for most students. However it has fallen short in key areas of school supplies, such as textbooks, uniforms, and desks. In order to maintain a healthy and vital learning environment, it is urgent that we provide these and other supplies included in this project.
How will this project solve this problem?
Achieving this project's objectives will ensure adequate school supplies at MCC Kawangware well into 2012 - in some cases (such as cooking equipment and beds ) through all of 2012 and beyond. Other items, such as uniforms, will help fill the current gap; no doubt more uniforms will be needed in 2012.
Potential Long Term Impact
The textbooks will in particular fill a long term gap in terms of textbooks, cooking supplies and beds, and ensure these issues are resolved for several years to come. The students will especially benefit from each having their own text book that conforms to the Kenyan national curriculum. MCC Kawangware students have done remarkably well on the national exams in the past 2 years but having their own text books will greatly assist them to do even better.
