Summary
Guatemala is the 4th most chronically malnourished country in the world. To empower our partner communities in achieving food security, FUNCEDESCRI trains Mayan families in sustainable agriculture
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Guatemala is the 4th most chronically malnourished country in the world. 70% of children under 5 in the highlands where FUNCEDESCRI works are chronically malnourished and the country's minimum wage only covers 75% of the basic food basket. Since the regions where FUNCEDESCRI works suffer from some of the lowest levels of food security in the country, we support our partner families in their community-led initiatives to achieve food security and food sovereignty.
How will this project solve this problem?
We support our communities in achieving food sovereignty by sharing organic farming techniques, improving access to local markets, training community health promoters, facilitating appropriate technology projects, and fostering local organization.
Potential Long Term Impact
Guatemalan communities, organizations, and students will be supported with the educational, technical, and organizational tools necessary to catalyze their own community-led development and to achieve food security and food sovereignty.
Project Message
FUNCEDESCRI believes in the practice of learning by doing. We teach families to fish instead of giving away the fish, so that they may be the agents behind their own community development.
