Education Heals

Dear Supporter,

This project has been established to aid the local schools which are currently over populated, under-staffed and under-resourced. It aims to improve facilities and resources, supply assistant teachers, and text books for every student.

With the over flow of immigrants, due to the booming tourist industry, the public schools have become over populated, under staffed and under resourced. Currently students attend school for 3 hrs a day, with teachers often having to group grades together.

With support, the project will include:

  • Textbooks for every student
  • Assistant Biligual teachers
  • Assistance with labor and materials for the construction of basic classroom facilities
  • Assistance with infrastructure and grounds maintance
  • Adult evening language classes
  • Extra curricular and after shcool activities
  • Assistance in developing a small scale IT center with computers, a printer and photocopier
  • Assistance in developing a small scale library.

Education fights crimes, violence and wars...education unites us all.

Many thanks for your continuing support

Happy New Year

Dear Supporter,

December we saw our kindergarten class of 2013 graduate and our new classroom were completed with generous donations from you and lots of volunteer work!

For 2014, we are sponsoring three of our graduates to study at the local non-profit bilingual school which is a considerable amount per month, so we have plenty of fundraisers planned for this year. We will also continue our own sponsorship program with the Mal Pais Education Project Kinder, we have 10 students starting on Monday!

We are grateful for the opportunity to unite our little community through education. Through our learning center and community center we're able to support and empower local families and facilitate a brighter future for our students.

Happy New Year and thank you all for your support in our community/education project.

All the best

Dia de Culturas

Dear Supporter,

After a lot of financial support we have finally started construction of the classrooms for our kindergarten in Mal Pais! We still need to raise funds for classroom furniture and supplies and volunteers are ready to start painting next month. The doors will be open in January 2014 and we are very excited to welcome our new students.
In Costa Rica, October is the month to celebrate world culture with October 12th being a national holiday called 'Dia de Culturas", to highlight both the cultural contributions of the Spanish, indigenous and Caribbeans. We enjoy this time with the students to celebrate different cultures and integrate global issues into the curriculum.
In December, three of our sponsor students are graduating and we are hoping to continue sponsoring them with full scholarship at the non-profit community bilingual school "Escuela Futuro Verde"...so plenty more fundraising events to come.

We are grateful to all our private sponsors who help us finance the project and also the many volunteers who have and still continue to share their time and energy.

Many thanks

Sonya Danchik

New classrooms and sponsorships

We hope this report finds you well! A lot of changes for the project are coming up. We are excited to build a new classroom for the kindergarten and plan on a fundraiser to help with the building costs. We also have two volunteer teachers who are pregnant, which is very exciting! So we have been busy the past couple of months interviewing international teachers and we are happy to welcome new members to the team very soon.

Unfortunately we had to postpone our July fundraiser due to bad weather. We are planning to reschedule soon and hope it will be a success. We hope to gather sufficient funds to continue to sponsor our graduating students so they may attend the Bilingual school in Cobano.
All our students are doing really well in both languages and the project has really made a positive impact on the community and we are thankful to be a apart of it.
Thank you for your continuing support for this community.

Organic garden and computer classes

The pre-school program in Mal Pais is in full swing and this years new recruits are already showing so much progress, which is very pleasing. We have also started a school organic garden, with volunteers helping us teach the children the importance of growing healthy food and caring for the planet.
Two of our volunteer teachers have started a community football club for the children, which has been well received and they look forward to future games with other villages and schools.
The public school of Mal Pais were part of a government funded program, where every student was given a laptop. They now have computer classes as part of their curriculum which are taught by a local volunteer. The director has asked us to buy a new router to help with internet access as the last one we purchased, fell victim to humidity, we should have a new one in the next few weeks.
At the end of this month twenty overseas students will be visiting the area and their director has asked if they can volunteer with the program. The answer was "Yes, please!" They will be helping the public schools and the pre-schools in Mal Pais with yard clean-up and also reading stories and playing games with the children.
We are also planning a fundraiser for the end of this month, we'll be using a projector to play an outdoor movie with food/drink and a raffle. It will be fun to sit on blankets and enjoy a movie while raising money for our graduate students so they can have the opportunity to continue with a bilingual education.
For now no big plans for June...just waiting for the rain!!!
