Be part of providing safe births for infants and quality health care for their mothers in northern Haiti!
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Haiti has one of the highest maternal and neonatal morality rates in the Caribbean and Latin American region. Estimates of Haiti's maternal mortality ratio vary from 300 to 630 deaths per 100,000 live births. Causes of maternal death in Haiti are often due to preeclampsia/eclampsia, hemorrhage, unsafe abortions, sepsis, and obstructed labor. Childbirth is also a critical time for the child-, neonatal deaths account for 16% - 31% of all under-five deaths.
How will this project solve this problem?
This project will improve access to & the quality of health care. We will Conduct post-partum visits after delivery by community health workers Provide free emergency transportation for obstetrical emergencies Train traditional birth attendants Make wide range long term contraception options available Keep a leading 45 bed maternity and pediatric unit open Created, staff and fund mobile prenatal clinics Improve access to education through home visits and rally posts
Potential Long Term Impact
In the past 15 years, infant mortality has decreased by 25%, and under-five mortality has decreased by 22%. These intervention addresses many of the barriers to care, and also provides concrete solutions for women & their children. in 2012, one of the hospitals we are supporting has cared for over 5,000 women, children and babies, saving lives every day, and reducing the maternal and infant morality rate in its target area.
