We will soon be deactivating this project because of corporate and foundation support we have received for the public awareness campaign promoting child helmet us in Vietnam. We wanted to give you one more update on the impact of your donation before removing the project from Global Giving.
AIP Foundation launched our three-year public awareness campaign in 2011, and with your help it has progressed spectacularly. At the end of 2011, tens of thousands of flyers were handed out at public areas dispeling myths that keep many parents from putting helmets on their children. Workshops were held to engage parents and numerous other stakeholders from the government, nonprofit, and private sectors. Soon, AIP Foundation and the World Health Organization will team up with local authorities on stronger enforcement of the requirement for all children over 6 years of age to wear a helmet.
With the sight of helmet-less children still all too common, AIP Foundation will soon begin airing its newly produced television commercial entitled "When I Grow Up." A national communications campaign will accompany the TV spot, with billboards, social media, talk shows, and public events serving as other outlets for changing behavior.
With strong corporation and foundation support for the campaign, we decided to close down this Global Giving project and focus our online fundraising efforts on our other Global Giving project: "Give a Vietnamese Child a Helmet; Save a Life." The money donated towards that project goes towards donating helmets to children and educating them about safe road behavior.

“Every year over 12,00 people die on roads and 30,00 are seriously injured..most of these cases could have been prevented by simply wearing a helmet…Wear a helmet. There are no excuses.” - 2007 Public Service Announcement by Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, Vietnam Helmet Wearing Coalition, and National Traffic Safety Committee.
This was a public service announcement by Asia Injury Prevention Foundation in 2007 to spread awareness about the life-saving impact of wearing helmets. Instead of 12,000, now 11,000 people die per year on roads. When I arrived in Vietnam, I was shocked by the chaos of street traffic and the number of children I saw riding motorbikes with their parents and not wearing helmets. On Friday, Apri 6, I was able to spend the morning with Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, meet staff, and see their programs in action.
Not only was I able to visit a school benefitting from AIP Foundation's "Click On Safety", "Helmets For Kids", and "Safe Routes to School" programs, I was able to sit with Executive Director, Mirjam, and Development Coordinator, Aaron, to learn about all of the projects, public awareness campaigns, successes, and challenges of AIP Foundation. AIP Foundation was able to accelerate approval of the Vietnam Helmet Law and because of this, helmet wearing has increased 10% to 98% by adults. AIP Foundation now works with the mass media to create awareness campaigns about how wearing a helmet can save lives.
At the end of the visit, I was able to learn more about Protec, a non-profit arm of AIP Foundation that is increasing quality and standard in the helmet industry in Vietnam. Protec helmets are the "world's first "tropical" motorcycle helmet designed...low cost, lightweight...appropriate for warm climates" via AIP brochure. Protec is a social business that reinvests all profits back into AIP Foundation to help create self-sustainability as well as hire disabled workers to provide opportunities for the disadvantaged.
It is unfathomable to understand the importance of helmet-wearing unless one has been to Vietnam and driven through traffic on a motorbike. Motorbikes are the main means of transportation for people in Vietnam. The law currently only requires adults and children over 6 to wear helmets, but many kids older than 6 still do not wear helmets and the law is not effectively enforced. This was similar to my experience in Cambodia, where I saw a majority of not only children but also adults not wearing helmets. I now own my very own helmet for the remainder of my time in Southeast Asia with GlobalGiving - and it's a Protec helmet.

In 2011 alone, AIP Foundation programs directly impacted about 18,000 children in Vietnam, whether by providing them with helmets or traffic safety education. Many of their teachers and parents also received helmets, training, or informational materials. Beyond that, over 85,000 people learned about the importance of child helmet use through flyers or public events related to our public awareness campaign. But the sight of vulnerable children riding motorbikes without helmets remains all too common.

The Tet holiday celebrating the Lunar New Year in Vietnam is a festive time of family gatherings and relaxation. At the same time, with many people traveling long distances back to their hometowns, it is one of the most dangerous times on the roads in Vietnam. While the number of deaths and injuries from traffic accidents over Tet declined this year, 137 people still died in just four days over the holiday. Each year, the holiday serves as a reminder of the important work that needs to be done to promote safer behavior on the roads.
Over the past few months, AIP Foundation has continued to put helmets on children’s heads and encourage child helmet use throughout Vietnam.
A Family Day was held in Ho Chi Minh City on December 18 to engage parents and children to promote helmet use. At the event, Miss Vietnam 2008, Tran Thi Thuy Dung, interacted with children as they participated in road safety games, including helmet painting and bicycle racing. Throughout the day, free helmets were awarded to children.
On January 5, Ho Chi Minh City’s Pham Van Chieu Primary School received a donation of 1,870 helmets from United Parcel Service through a Helmets for Kids program. At the launch ceremony, parents, students, and teachers were reminded why helmet wearing is so important. Helmet wearing at Pham Van Chieu Primary school was typically very low, and this event made helmets appear fun and cool, helping establish helmets as part of the daily school uniform.
At Nguyen Tri Phuong Primary School in Dong Nai Province near Ho Chi Minh City, 80% of the students walk to school every day along busy streets. Therefore, FedEx and Safe Kids Vietnam (implemented by AIP Foundation) carried out pedestrian safety interventions at the school. Traffic lights, rumble strips, zebra crossings, and traffic signs were installed and 700 reflective jackets were distributed to the students. Teachers were trained in road safety education and given tools for hands-on teaching. A traffic safety corner with four working traffic lights and an intersection was set up in the playground to help students put their classroom learning into practice.
In the coming months, Phase I of AIP Foundation’s public awareness campaign, “Children also need a helmet,” will be completed. In this first phase that began in late 2010, numerous partnerships have been built among nongovernmental, governmental, multilateral, and private sector traffic safety stakeholders. Furthermore, almost 85,000 informational flyers were distributed to parents to contradict widely held misconceptions about child helmet use. With a television commercial and billboards currently in production, the campaign is poised to greatly expand its reach and combat the dangerously low child helmet rate in Vietnam.

Last week while riding in a taxi on the highway outside of Ho Chi Minh City, I saw the aftermath of a fatal road traffic accident. A mangled motorbike lay on the ground next to two bodies. It was a devastating site, especially considering that with 30 people dying on Vietnam’s roads each day, the same scene gets played out over and over, day by day. The experience made me realize more than ever how important it is to continue our work to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities here in Vietnam.
The last few months have been very eventful, with the implementation of several school-based programs, the launch of two public awareness campaigns, and the commemoration of the Worldwide Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims. On October 3, the 250 first grade students at Nguyen Thi Dinh Primary School received shiny new helmets courtesy of Cai Mep International Terminal Co., Ltd., a shipping terminal near Ho Chi Minh City. In November, helmet handover ceremonies were held at Phuoc Long and Phuoc Thanh primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City. The events celebrated Intel Products Vietnam's sponsorship of three different programs at those schools.
FedEx Express, and AIP Foundation, the implementing agent for Safe Kids Worldwide's programs in Vietnam, officially launched the Click on Safety e-Learning program at a primary school in Nam Dinh Province. The program aims to provide children with the opportunity to experiment with traffic consequences in a fun and risk-free environment.
Public Awareness Campaigns
Over the past couple months, we’ve launched campaigns in Vietnam and Cambodia. In Vietnam the campaign focuses on child helmet use, and in Cambodia it encourages helmet use among motorcycle passengers. AIP Foundation has already begun awareness raising activities. Television commercials, which are in production, will soon be broadcast nationwide in both countries.
The Worldwide Day of Remembrance
The Worldwide Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was commemorated in Vietnam on November 20 with a ceremony hosted by Actress Kathy Uyen and singer Thanh Bui. After the release of 30 birds to symbolize the 30 lives lost each day on Vietnam's roads, Uyen and Bui interviewed local authorities about the causes and consequences of road traffic accidents.
