Our campaign will end the use of harmful and polluting candles and kerosene by providing solar and wind-up Lifelights – which are clean, safe, LED lanterns isolated and orphaned child-led families.
Rwanda has tens of thousands of children who head households. The poorest of the poor, they spend what little money they have on dangerous candles or kerosene just to have any light at night. They buy kerosene by the tablespoon and burn it in makeshift tin lamps. Kerosene causes eye and lung problems and along with candles, cause fires which lead to loss of possessions, burns and even death. Without light, these children can do little that is productive after the sun sets.
Using LED Lifelights, children will be able to undertake many activities like studying, cooking, washing up, walking to pit latrine – that they could not easily do before. They will feel safer and be able to see any dangers, whether real or imagined
The Lifelights will help dramatically improve the quality of children’s lives, they will no longer be in danger of fire and greater peace of mind will be achieved. We anticipate that grades will improve since children will be able to study at night.
The Light of Your Life initiative will truly help improve the daily lives of critically poor child families who depend on fossil fuels after dark.
