This project will educate 300 marginalized young women and men by providing non-formal education and vocational skills training. Adeso will create six Mobile Non-Formal Education Centers to ensure that they can access education that does not conflict with their semi-nomadic lives tending the family cattle, goats, and sheep. 90 girls will receive targeted vocational training at a year-long program focused on livelihood development, including micro-grants for new business ventures.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Marsabit County exhibits the poorest education indicators in Kenya, with literacy levels as low as 20%. Over 75% of the people live a semi-nomadic lifestyle tending livestock, which limits access to formal education. Educational policies have overlooked mobile education in favor of urban and settled schools, and gender biases mean many girls are denied access to education and skill enhancement training. This excludes girls from the opportunity to achieve an education to improve their lives.
How will this project solve this problem?
Adeso's project creates a mobile education model that meets the needs of pastoral girls and fits their cultural practices. We will create 6 mobile Non-Formal Education Centers, catering to 50 pupils each, that allow marginalized communities access to education and allow for greater enrollment and transition into formal and vocational training. Adeso will also enroll 90 girls to undergo vocational training tailored to emerging job sectors, and provide them with business start-up grants.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will educate 300 children by providing non-formal education and vocational skills training. Through this project, the livelihood options of marginalized girls in remote areas will improve, leading to their economic empowerment, and increasing their participation in their respective communities. This education model would be replicated and enlarged to allow similar communities in Kenya access to educational support.
