Summary

This project provides 70,000 English library and textbooks to support literacy learning in rural Madagascar.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In April 2007, the government of Madagascar implemented English as an offical language, in addition to French and Malagasy. English use and teaching are being heavily promoted, creating an enhanced need for books and teaching materials at all levels. Feedback Madagascar's distribution of 70,000 books will provide tangible learning opportunities for 1 million readers over the life of the books.

How will this project solve this problem?

Two forty-foot containers will supply approximately 70,000 books, enough to fill twenty schools or libraries. This project has the potential to impact 1 million Malagasy English learners over the life of the books.

Potential Long Term Impact

This project will supply 70,000 up to date and relevant English books, allowing 1,000,000 literacy learners to further their education.

Project Message

"The government has made English a second language for Madagascar but we haven’t yet received any assistance with materials. We would like to make books available for all of the people…"
- Pasteur Stevens, Mayor of Ankarimbelo, Ikongo
